A Judge's Perspective: Ranch Riding

AQHA Judge April Devitt analyzes a Level 1 youth ranch riding pattern from the 2017 Nutrena East AQHA Level 1 Championships.

Judges in ranch riding are looking for forward movement, smoothness in transitions and a horse that works like he would be comfortable on a ranch.

So what does that look like in a specific pattern?

In this video, April Devitt analyzes the Level 1 youth ranch riding pattern from the 2017 Nutrena East AQHA Level 1 Championships, specifically the winning go of Grace Wilson of Smithfield, Virginia, riding Bueno Summer Starlet.

The 2010 red roan mare is by Bueno Starlight and out of Aprils Summer Star by Mifillena. She was bred by Heather J. Powell of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, and Grace, 17, owns her.

In the May 2017 Journal, April has some suggestions on how to improve your next horse show whether you’re showing in ranch riding or any other class.
