After 16 trials on Monday at The Downs at Albuquerque, half the field for the $3-million All American Futurity (G1) has been set. The sport’s richest race will be run on Labor Day, September 1, in Albuquerque after being moved due to flooding in early July at Ruidoso Downs.
The fastest qualifier came out of the seventh heat as King Of The Tide sprinted 440 yards in :21.001 against a 5 mph headwind to earn a 103 speed index under jockey Ricky Ramirez. The New Mexico-bred gelding by Eye Am King runs for Tod and E. Gene Bradley and Ware Brown, and he is trained by Trey Wood.
Bred by MJ Farms and a $130,000 graduate of the Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, King Of The Tide came into the trials off a runner-up finish in the $346,008 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) on June 15 at Ruidoso Downs. In the gelding’s two prior starts, he posted a maiden win at Sunland Park and a third-place finish in his trial for the Mountain Top Futurity. His earnings now stand at $85,842 after four starts. King Of The Tide is out of the stakes-winning Ocean Runaway mare Ms Riptide, whose foals include 2019 All American Futurity runner-up Mister Riptide, by Woodbridge.
The most accomplished qualifier on Monday was undefeated Political Twist, who won the first trial in a time of :21.055 with Luis Martinez up for trainer Xavier Rodriguez and owners La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC and Ray Willis. Also bred in New Mexico by MJ Farms, Political Twist is a gelding by Apollitical Jess who sold for $150,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding has won all five of his starts, including the $365,271 West Texas Futurity (G2) and $1-million Ruidoso Futurity (G1), and he boasts a bankroll of $609,017. His connections opted to bypass the Rainbow Futurity (G1), the finals of which were ultimately cancelled due to the flooding.
The third-fastest qualifier was Dragon Link, a California-bred gelding by Favorite Cartel who finished three-quarters of a length behind King Of The Tide in the seventh heat with a time of :21.118. Bred by Steve Burns, DVM, and sired by Favorite Cartel, Dragon Link finished fourth in his Ruidoso Futurity trial and second in his Rainbow Futurity trial in his only two other starts. Christian Cardenas rode for trainer James Gonzales III and owner Rancho El 48 LLC.
Kansas-bred AJs Wingman won the 15th heat to advance to the final with the fourth-fastest time of :21.135. Ridden by Ramiro Garcia for breeder/owner Paul Treadwell and trainer Jason Olmstead, the gelding by Apollitical Jess is riding a three-race winning streak that includes a maiden win on May 31 and a Rainbow Futurity trial victory on June 28.
The final qualifier on Monday was Envestor, an Arkansas-bred gelding by Dulce Sin Tacha who took the fourth trial in :21.136 with Ali Rivera in the saddle for trainer Zackary Stinebaugh. Bred by Belinda Shaw, he is owned by Richard Young, Joe David Yates and the trainer. Envestor has three wins from as many starts, including a victory in his Rainbow Futurity trial that qualified him to the cancelled final.
The five qualifiers to the $200,000 All American Juvenile are: Flying Chance (:21.166), Expensive Boots (:21.182), B AJ (:21.186), Effortless Favorite (:21.219) and Mr High Five (:21.220).
Sixteen more trials will determine the final five qualifiers for the All American Futurity on Tuesday with first post set for 11 a.m. MDT.
