Nine aged runners, headed by multiple graded stakes winner Shott Gun, are entered in Sunday's 400-yard, $40,000 Moonist Stakes at Los Alamitos.
A homebred son of Valiant Hero trained by Heath Taylor for owner Bobby D. Cox, Shott Gun will make his 5-year-old season debut and first lifetime start in California. The gray gelding is coming off of a 2022 campaign during which he won two stakes, including the Grade 2, 400-yard Miss Polly Classic Stakes at Delta Downs in Louisiana.
All told, Shott Gun has earned $580,619 from 18 starts in four states, and his eight wins include the 2020 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park. The gelding wil be ridden by Jose Nicasio from post 2.
The Moonist field will also feature four finalists from the February 19, 400-yard Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1), headed by fourth-place finisher Stuck In Probate. Trained by Valentin Zamudio for owner Vic3tory LLC, the 4-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding ended his sophomore campaign with a second-place run in the December 18, 400-yard Southern California Derby (G1).
Stuck In Probate will be seeking his first lifetime stakes winner in the Moonist. The gelding drew post 4 and will be ridden by Ruben Lozano.
