Omar Parades’ Flyin Chilitos is after his first stakes win against American Quarter Horses when he races in the $320,000-est. Evangeline Downs Futurity (G2) on December 21.
This comes after a win and two second-place finishes in two futurities that were not limited to American Quarter Horses.
Flyin Chilitos was the 2-5 favorite in the first of 11 Evangeline Downs Futurity trials and impressed on his way to :19.769 time for the 400 yards. He got a clean start from the inside post position and pulled out to a 1 ¼ length win. His time set the standard for every other trial contestant to try and match, however no other horse could do it.
The Chilitos-sired Flyin Chilitos took an interesting path to the Evangeline Downs Futurity.
Instead of racing strictly against American Quarter Horses, the double registered AQHA/APHA gelding raced against Paints, Appaloosas and dual registered horses in his previous start when he won the $106,907 Texas Hero Futurity against a mixed field at Lone Star Park. He drew an inside post position — the second post position — and started with the leaders. The 17-10 favorite then showed his class by pulling out to a one-length win.
He also started against mixed company in the $67,285 Colors of Houston Futurity at Sam Houston Park. He made a late run to finish a non-threatening second.
Sire Chilitos is a son of Apollitical Jess who earned $454,413 in his career. From three crops to race, he has gotten 48% winners from starters.
Flyin Chilitos is the first foal out of stakes competitor Sensational Senator. She did not earn any black type, however she competed in the Dash For Cash Derby (G2), Sam Houston Futurity (G2), Old South Derby, Gillespie County Fair Derby and the Miss Retama Stakes.
Second dam I Opening Sensation, by Eyesa Special, was a stakes winner with victories in the West/Southwest Championship Challenge (G2), East Distaff Challenge and the Canada Distaff Challenge. She was also second in the AQHRA Aged Series Enerpan Championship Sprint and third in the East Distaff Challenge.
In the West/Southwest Championship Challenge at Turf Paradise, I Opening Sensation competed with the leaders before drawing out to a one-length victory.
Upon her retirement, I Opening Sensation did not produce any stakes winners or stakes-placed competitors. However, she did produce Heritage Place Futurity finalist All American Stone and Gillespie County Fair Firecracker Futurity finalist Davids I Opener.
Third dam BR Sweet Sensation, a daughter of Tolltac, was third in the American-Canadian Futurity.
BR Sweet Sensation produced Balloon City Stakes winner Wontchadancewithme, Intermountain Futurity second-place finisher BR Special Fantasy and Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge runner-up Gossipaboutthis.
Flying Chilitos did not travel a conventional path to the Evangeline Downs Futurity. A strong showing in the Evangeline Downs Futurity would reinforce that there are many ways to attain stakes success.
