Sam Houston Derby Qualifiers

A strong group of 3-year-olds is set to run in the June 14 final.

Sam Houston Race Park on Thursday held four trials for the $275,200 Sam Houston Derby (G3). The 10 fastest qualifiers from the 400-yard heats are set to meet in the final on June 14.

Melchor Mendez’s Shez Flyn, a filly by Flying Cowboy 123, kept her perfect record this year intact with a 1 ¼-length victory in the third trial clocked in :19.937. Oliver Martinez rode the Texas-bred for trainer Arturo Juarez Flores. The filly’s previous wins this year came in allowance company at Sam Houston and Louisiana Downs. Her record now stands at 10-4-1-2 with earnings of $40,310.

In the second trial, Triple Five's Beaux Tye, a gelding by Favorite Cartel, got up to score the win in a time of :20.065 with Eddie Sanchez up for trainer Carlos Camarena. The Texas-bred hit the board three times in trials last year for graded futurities, and this effort advanced him to the a final for the first time. 

The full list of qualifiers is as follows: Fast Flyer 123 (:19.875), Shez Flyn (:19.937), Eagles Up (:19.962) Beaux Tye (:20.065), Mexican Kash (:20.092), Celena Olena (:20.113), Dr Pepper 123 (:20.157), Georg (:20.173), Butane (:20.181) and Chill To The Bone (:20.212).
