Stanley Cartel, a stakes-winning son of PYC Paint Your Wagon racing for Dunn Ranch and Weetona Stanley, is one of 28 3-year-olds entered in Sunday's Southern California Derby (G2) trials at Los Alamitos.

Four 400-yard heats will be contested. The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the December 22, $157,400 final.

Stanley Cartel is coming off of a ninth-place finish in the November 10, 400-yard Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1). However, the homebred colt began his career with a five-race win streak that included a wire-to-wire, 1 3/4-length victory in the August 24, 350-yard Sgt Pepper Feature Stakes. Monty Arrossa trains Stanley Cartel.

Stanley Cartel drew post 6 and will be ridden by Armando Cervantes in the second trial.

Other prominent sophomores entered include Keith Nellesen's Political Rivalry, a multiple graded stakes winning son of champion KVN Corona trained by Heath Taylor, and Dunn Ranch's SC Time To Run, a graded stakes winning Apollitical Jess gelding trained by Monty Arrossa.
